## Key findings

- **Right now:** Its bank peers split over the past 6 months: BNS (Bank of Nova Scotia) rose 22.4%, while BAC (Bank of America) fell 5.2%. BBVA has edged past the market, rising 11.7% over the past 6 months against 9.1% for the S&P 500 and 11.2% for the Nasdaq 100.
- **Stock or market?:** BBVA held up far better than its industry: it rose 3.1% over the past 3 months while the banks ETF KBE (State Street SPDR S&P Bank ETF) fell 6.8%. The S&P 500 rose 3.9%. Its bank peers did not move as one over the past 3 months: ITUB (Itaú Unibanco Holding) rose 16.7%, while BAC (Bank of America) fell 15.8%.
- **Past 1 to 3 years:** Over the past year, BBVA rose 35.2% against 15.8% for the S&P 500 and 17.9% for the Nasdaq 100. The same gap shows up over 3 years (281% against 89.3%).
- **Long term:** BBVA turned $10,000 into $64,200 over the past decade, against $42,100 in the S&P 500. BBVA's 10-year return of 542% puts it ahead of 88% of the stocks worth at least $300 million with that much history. The S&P 500 returned 321%.
- **In a crash:** Across seven sell-offs, BBVA has typically fallen 1.7 times as far as the S&P 500.
- **Diversification:** Over 10 years, BBVA's beta versus the S&P 500 was 1.11: in the S&P 500's rising months it gained 1.2 times as much as the index, and in falling months it lost 1.0 times as much. Against the S&P 500, BBVA has a correlation of 0.42 over 5 years, more closely than 55% of stocks worth at least $300 million. Next to an index fund it is some diversification, but not a hedge.
- **Better options**
  - **Popular alternatives:** JPM (JPMorgan Chase & Co.) fell less than BBVA in each recent sell-off and kept up with it over the past decade.
  - **Nearby categories and themes:** IBKR (Interactive Brokers Group, investment banking & brokerage) fell less than BBVA in each recent sell-off and kept up with it over the past decade.
  - **Whole market:** Few investments have done better on both counts: only one of the 3,633 stocks and funds worth at least $500 million earned more than BBVA with less volatility over the past 5 years, among them CAH (Cardinal Health).

## Common questions

### What was BBVA's worst drawdown?

BBVA's deepest decline since it began trading in 1988 was 80.1%, from December 2007 to September 2020. It took about four years from the low to climb back to its old high.

### What were BBVA's best and worst years?

Over 29 full calendar years, BBVA's best year was 2025, when it returned 154%. Its worst was 2008, with a return of -45.6%.

### Is there a better investment than BBVA?

Among BBVA's popular alternatives, JPM fell less than BBVA in each recent sell-off and kept up with it over the past decade. Looking beyond its popular alternatives, IBKR (investment banking & brokerage) fell less than BBVA in each recent sell-off and kept up with it over the past decade.

### Is BBVA more volatile than the S&P 500?

Yes. BBVA's volatility over the past 5 years was 33.3%, about twice the S&P 500's 17.1%. Volatility measures how widely returns swing around their average: in roughly two years out of three, BBVA's return lands within 33.3% of its average, either way. The higher it is, the rougher the ride and the harder it is to hold through a slump.

### What is BBVA's Sharpe ratio?

BBVA's Sharpe ratio over the past 5 years was 1.16, against 0.79 for the S&P 500, so BBVA earned more for each unit of risk than an index fund did. The Sharpe ratio is the return earned above cash for each unit of volatility: two investments with the same return are not equal if one got there with far bigger swings.

### How correlated is BBVA with the S&P 500?

Over the past 5 years, BBVA's monthly returns had a correlation of 0.42 with the S&P 500. Correlation runs from 1 (moving in lockstep) through 0 (unrelated) to −1 (moving in opposite directions). They often move together: some diversification next to an index fund, but not a cushion. In the table, the correlation column measures each option against BBVA instead: the lower it is, the more that option would diversify a BBVA holding.

### What are the best alternatives to BBVA?

None of the 25 popular alternatives we compared outperformed BBVA in at least 3 of 5 short-term and 2 of 3 long-term timeframes, which says more about BBVA's strength than about its alternatives.

### Did BBVA outperform the S&P 500?

BBVA finished ahead of the S&P 500 (SPY) in 14 of 29 full calendar years. In 2025, it returned +154%, against +17.7% for the index.

### How did BBVA do in stock market crashes?

BBVA fell less than the S&P 500 (SPY) in two of the ten major crashes it has traded through, and further in eight. The clearest case was the 2015 China and oil sell-off, when BBVA fell 41.0% and the S&P 500 fell 12.8%.

### What diversifies BBVA?

These had a low correlation with BBVA over the past 5 years and still earned a positive 5-year return: among large ETFs, DXJ (correlation 0.41), EMLP (correlation 0.35) and SMH (correlation 0.16); among large stocks, CAH (correlation 0.30), CLS (correlation 0.15) and FIX (correlation 0.16). A correlation near zero means the two have moved largely independently.
